The client wanted to create a light and spacious family kitchen dining space. The original kitchen was to the rear in a flat roofed extension, but they did not know whether to extend this room or locate the new kitchen elsewhere. We prepared a number of schemes to explore howt his could be achieved. The client settled on a side extension infilling the space to the side of the property.
A particular challenge was a sloping boundary line with the neighbour. This meant that from the front the extension is a small unassuming building, but then widens to the rear to create the spacious dining area. A structural ridge was used at the rear to create an open ceiling internally. This helps refract light from several rooflights around the space, creating a light and airy ambience.
